One wade, One Bite, One Really Big Fish
January 1, 2007
The gifts are unwrapped, the fireworks are popped, and the lights on the Christmas tree no longer blink; however, the excellent numbers of trout and redfish in East Matagorda Bay haven’t quit biting yet!
Wading for big trout was the best late in the week for me. On Sunday, I made an all-day wade from morning until sunset and a 27 and 28 inch trout fell prey to a Day-Glo Corky that I worked very slow. Late in the evening, when the moon was at the top of my head, the trusty bone super spook enticed several more trout and redfish. The full moon has allowed for some extra strong tides and excellent bites.
The following day was the same when I arrived at 11 during a slack tide. I made a three hour wade and caught another big trout, this time a little over 28 inches. The big fish were biting this week; patience was the name of the game. All it took was one bite and one wade.
I'll be working the Laguna Booth several times this week at the boat show. It will take place January 5-14th at the Reliant Center and is expected to be packed with saltwater fishing seminars and booths. The weather this week looks stable with wind predicted at an average of 10 knots throughout the week with no major changes in the forecast.
Let’s hope the weather man is right!
'Til Next Week, Kyle Tomek
